ALT News: Plagiarism Webcasts March 22 & 29

The Board of Regents will present a series of two System-wide webcasts on plagiarism detection issues featuring presentations by two USG instructors and USG staff from Advanced Learning Technologies and the Office of Legal Affairs.

Plagiarism Revealed will focus on what is and is not plagiarism, teaching proper citation practice, preventing plagiarism, detecting plagiarism and dealing with plagiarism.

Place: HorizonWimba’s Live Classroom
Presenter: Bob Brown, Lecturer, Information Technology, Southern Polytechnic State University will discuss his experience with plagiarism in the classroom, using Turnitin  and other mechanisms to deter plagiarism, and ways to create plagiarism resistant assignments.

Detecting Plagiarism will focus on plagiarism detection technical tools and legal issues.

Presenters: Ms. Liz Johnson, Project Manager, Advanced Learning Technologies will briefly review plagiarism detection solutions and summarize the results of this year’s USG Turnitin survey.  Mr. J. Burns Newsome, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs, University System of Georgia will address the primary legal questions relating to the use of plagiarism detection services: Does Turnitin infringe upon student intellectual property rights by adding student papers to their database? Do plagiarism detection services observe FERPA regulations when a student submits a paper?
