Suggestions and Strategies

Today, many individuals do not have the luxury of a flexible schedule - one where you might be able to rearrange your time and work with a group on a project, for example. When beginning an online course, however, it would be useful to examine the demands on your schedule, and see where you might find some ways to modify the demands on your time.

Time is usually limited in today's hectic lifestyle, and yet, to truly succeed in an online course, you must be able to devote a significant amount of time to studying. It would be useful to ask the instructor about the estimated amount of work in any particular course. Again, negotiating for time is going to prove useful as you balance your family, work, and new commitment to studying.

A quiet and secure location for studying is important for anyone beginning an educational adventure. If you do not have an established study space in your home, then you should take the time and effort to create one. Be sure that you have room to spread your work out and that there are no sources of distraction (television, reading materials, etc.).

An online course will, by its very nature, require a lot of time online. If you have a traditional dial-up modem, and only one phone line, then it is possible that your family may not be pleased when you tie up the phone. Some other options exist and are worthy of consideration. You might investigate if DSL (digital subscriber line) or cable modem services are available in your area. With either of these options, you will not tie up the phone line when you are working, and as an additional bonus, you will be able to complete your work and searching much faster than with dial-up access.

It may seem obvious, but the support of your friends, family, and perhaps your employer will make your challenges and efforts in completing courses or a degree much easier and more pleasant. Anything that can be discussed before you begin will be beneficial.
